Safety Tips: Ways to Lessen Your Likelihood of Being Attacked

Safety Tips
Being attacked on the street comes when someone least expects it. In order to be prepared when this happens, here are some tips to avoid being attacked.

What are some safety tips?
Stay in well populated, well lit areas. Avoid secluded areas if you are alone or in a small group.
Wear reflective clothing at night so drivers can spot you.
Do not wear headphones.
Carry a cell phone for emergencies, but try to avoid making calls or texting, unless necessary. Cell phones are a big distraction.
Let others know where you are going and when you will be back.
Keep your head up and be aware of your surroundings.
Have your keys ready when you get home to avoid being distracted and becoming a target.
Try reducing the amount of bags you are carrying. Having too many bags can prevent your ability to react in an unsafe situation.
If you think you are being followed, go into an open store, restaurant, or trusted home if you can't make it to a police or fire station.
If someone asks for directions or the time, keep your distance and keep your head up.
If you are under attack, do not stop yelling, Be as loud as you can.

What are some ways to avoid being attacked?
Awareness- Being aware of your surroundings is so important when it comes to protecting yourself. Knowing who is around you and what is nearby is important when spotting an attacker. You also need to be aware of yourself. Do not walk with headphones in because you need to see and hear what's happening around you. BEing confident and having awareness makes you less of a target.
Trust your instincts- If you feel something is wrong, you need to trust your instincts and get away from the situation as fast as possible. Do not try to rationalize the situation and do not hesitate to scream or yell for help.
Maintain space- If you feel something is wrong, it is important that you change your path, change your direction, or cross the street.
Stay in Groups- Especially walking at night or in more private areas, it’s important to be with a group of people.
Keep valuables secure- Keep all your things of value or importance tucked away.
If you are being mugged, Oblige- If they ask for any of your valuables, give it to the attacker. Your life is more important than your physical belongings.
Escape- The best way to get out of an unsafe situation is to escape. Do whatever you can to get away from the situation as fast as possible.
Never go to a location with the attacker- Do not let them force you to go to another location. You don’t know what they have planned or what will be there no matter the situation.
Preparation- Taking self defense classes are a great way to prepare for these situations. Here at Krav Maga, we teach the basics of self defense for all levels in an easy to learn way. Build up your skill and confidence to make sure you're prepared in an uncomfortable situation.
Most importantly, IF YOU ARE BEING FOLLOWED OR WATCHED, GET TO A SAFE, CROWDED AREA AND CALL 911!
